The Department of Laboratory Medicine has the largest test menu of any laboratory in the Pacific Northwest, and is an internationally recognized leader in test development, quality, and interpretation. A full menu of testing choices are available in all the major laboratory disciplines including hematology, coagulation, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, virology, molecular diagnostics, and genetics. All of the clinical tests offered by the department are available to patients within the UW Medicine system, as well as to outside medical facilities through our Reference Laboratory Services (phone: (206) 598-6066).
When caregivers place orders for clinical tests with our department, they are given access to clinical consultation services offered by our faculty, which consists of more than 20 full-time, board-certified physicians and laboratory scientists. The best way to start a clinical consultation is by calling the Laboratory Medicine Resident on call at (206) 598-6190.
Our philosophy of testing is straightforward. We support and encourage the community services model of testing, in which patients have testing performed as geographically close to them as possible, so that testing and expertise remain available within a community.
